They weren’t in a karaoke, but it was just like. At the last Tour de France, we could see in social media Antoine Duchesne and his teammates from Groupama-FDJ singing in unison America is crying Fringants Cowboys on the team bus.
When announcing his retirement from the sport on Thursday, Duchesne mentioned that his experience during the last Tour de France could not be surpassed. This is explained by the fourth place in the general classification of his teammate David Gaudu, but also by the team spirit that reigned within the formation.
Gaudu confirmed that the Quebecer’s lively attitude had an impact on his result on the Grande Boucle.
“He is someone who puts a lot of atmosphere in a group and who allowed us not only to be a group of runners, but also to be friends. He always set the mood and we always laughed. Even if sometimes we were in doubt, he set the mood and he did a lot on the Tour de France. »
In an interview with Sportcom last fall, cross-country ski coach Louis Bouchard, who led Alex Harvey to two world championship titles, spoke of the impact of these athletes who do not have the the most brilliant, but which help the best to raise their level a notch.
This is exactly what Antoine Duchesne did in his last Tour de France.
“That person who wins medals, she can’t win any without her colleague, who won’t win any, Bouchard analyzed then. (This colleague) is going to do a 30e or 20e place, but it is he who makes him laugh at dinner time, he is the one who trains with the medalist and who challenges him in certain training sessions where he is perhaps less good. But he is good at it. That’s what makes the medalist even better, so that’s a big deal. »
Duchesne has only one victory to his professional list – the title of 2018 Canadian champion – but his main highlights are having been able to breathe a dose of good humor into his teammates in order to make them better. To play this role of lieutenant, and not only on the road.
“I find the routine of everything around the race overwhelming,” explains Duchesne. Everyone is in their bubble or on their phone. These are big days from point A to point B with transfers and massages. It pisses me off leaving for two weeks or a month, so as well make the best out of it. »
This state of mind will be his main legacy to his sport.
“It’s no secret that working in a good mood is more efficient for everyone. I hope it will have given this desire to others to continue even if I leave. I had a lot of fun trying to keep my head up when the guys were down, tired or not doing so well. »
A quality that will serve him well in his new life.
