PARIS – The Czech Jan Hirt (Intermarché) won the Tour of Oman on Tuesday in Muscat at the end of the sixth stage won in a sprint by the Colombian Fernando Gaviria (UAE).

Hirt preceded in the final classification the Italian Fausto Masnada (Quick-Step), second by one minute, and the Portuguese Rui Costa (UAE).

First ranked Frenchman, Elie Gesbert (Arkea) took fourth place in the event while his young teammate Kévin Vauquelin (20), a revelation of the race, ranked sixth.

In the last 135.5 kilometer long stage, Gaviria, led by his Argentinian “launcher” Maximiliano Richeze, beat the Australian Kaden Groves and the Belgian Amaury Capiot to sign his second success. He had already won last Thursday in the first stage.

Hirt, who is 31, took control of the race on Monday at the finish at the top of the Montagne Verte.

The Czech, whose previous victory dated back to 2016 (Tour of Austria), is one of the good climbers in the peloton. In particular, he took second place in the tough Mortirolo stage in the 2019 Giro in the deluge, just behind the Italian Giulio Ciccone.

Hirt succeeded Kazakh Alexey Lutsenko (Astana), who had won the two previous editions (2018 and 2019), on the list.

The race, created in 2010, was not organized in 2020 (national mourning) nor in 2021 (health context).
