Mathias Guillemette was patient throughout the 36 laps of the Track Cycling Champions League elimination race on Saturday in Mallorca, Spain. The strategy will have finally paid off for the Quebecer who won the top honors of this event.
At the end of an extremely technical race where Guillemette was never worried about suffering elimination by managing to position himself in the right way within the peloton, the Quebecer was alone on the track with the American Gavin Hoover, winning of the 2022 edition of the Champions League for endurance events.
Seeing that his opponent seemed out of breath at the start of the last lap, Guillemette opened the machine by launching his sprint and managed to outrun him quickly. The end of the race was a formality for the athlete from Trois-Rivières who took advantage of the last meters to celebrate by raising his arms towards the heights of the velodrome.
“I didn’t expect a victory at all today, I was going there to measure myself against the best, that was the real objective. It was only when we found ourselves in the top-6 that I really believed in it,” Guillemette told Sportcom.

“I knew I was going to have good luck if I got alone with Hoover at the very end, he was exhausted from the last two or three sprints. I was strategic then and as soon as I started my sprint, I knew it was really in my pocket. I’m really happy, it’s my first victory on the international scene. »
Britain’s Mark Stewart finished third.
Earlier in the day, Guillemette had finished sixth overall in a race which was won by this same Mark Stewart.
With these two results, Guillemette is second in the provisional general classification of the Champions League for endurance events thanks to his 30 points. He is five points behind Stewart and first. Spaniard Sebastian Mora (28 points) is currently third.
“I want to be consistent in each of the races for the next stages. It’s important to perform well in each of the races to maintain a good place in the general classification,” concluded Guillemette.
It was Guillemette’s first appearance in the Champions League. The cyclists will now head to Berlin, Germany for the second leg of the circuit next Saturday.
