After his serious accident, Egan Bernal recovers quickly
(Bogota) Colombian cyclist Egan Bernal reassured his supporters, less than a month after the accident that almost cost him his life, by posting a video on Instagram on Friday showing him pedaling on a static bike and hitting twice in a soccer ball.
On January 24, the winner of the Tour de France 2019 had struck head-on the back of a bus which had stopped suddenly during a training outing with his Ineos-Grenadiers team.
Victim of multiple fractures, Bernal, 25, underwent five operations on the spine, right leg and right hand. He said he “had a 95% chance of being a paraplegic and almost lost his life”.
In the video, he no longer has the neck brace he has been wearing since leaving the hospital, in a wheelchair, on February 7, but neither he, nor his team, nor his entourage gave any indication of the date of his return to competition.
The first Colombian winner of the Tour, Bernal had abandoned during the 2020 edition because of back pain. He won the Tour of Italy last year.
