MANCHESTER, UK – Cyclist Jason Kenny, Britain’s most decorated Olympian, has announced his retirement from competition, but will remain with the British team as a mentor.
Kenny has won nine medals, including seven gold, in four Olympic Games.
No other cyclist has landed more.
Kenny was thrust into the limelight when he won three gold medals at the World Junior Track Cycling Championships in 2006.
He won his first Olympic gold medal at the Beijing Games in 2008 in the team sprint event.
In Beijing, only his compatriot Chris Hoy beat him to the individual speed test. Four years later, in London, he finished on the top step of the podium in both events.
Kenny took top honors in team sprint, individual sprint and keirin at the Rio Games in 2016. He joined Hoy with six career Olympic gold medals.
Then, in Tokyo last summer, Kenny took silver in team sprint and added a seventh Olympic gold medal to his collection by winning the keirin.
He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in December.
