MADRID — Italian cyclist Sonny Colbrelli was “conscious and feeling well” after collapsing the day before at the conclusion of the first stage of the Tour of Catalonia, his team has announced.

Team Bahrain Victorious revealed that Colbrelli “has since been in contact with family and friends as he recovers in hospital”.

The team added he would undergo further medical tests to ‘find out the cause of the incident yesterday (Monday)’ in which he collapsed after crossing the line in the final sprint. Colbrelli finished the stage in second place.

Spanish media reported that CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) was performed on the 31-year-old runner after he lost consciousness.

“All heart tests performed last night showed no signs of concern,” the team said.
