PARIS, France – Dutchman Tom Dumoulin (Jumbo), winner of the Giro in 2017, announced Friday at the age of 31 his decision to end his career as a professional cyclist at the end of the season.

Dumoulin, silver medalist in the time trial last summer at the Tokyo Olympics, stopped for the first time at the start of 2021.

“I have decided that 2022 will be my last year as a professional cyclist,” Dumoulin said in a statement posted to his social media accounts.

“I am a happy man and I can be very proud of my career,” he adds. “We have decided the team and I to achieve a few more great things over the past few months. »

The Dutchman, who participated in the recent Giro (abandoned 14th stage), is not scheduled for the Tour de France, in which he took second place in 2018.

After his retirement in 2021, he found his place in the peloton a few months later and won the national time trial title before climbing to the Olympic podium for the second time, five after his silver medal in Rio already in the time trial.

The “Maastricht butterfly”, a nickname he does not like, began his career in the Argos team, which became Giant and then Sunweb (now DSM) in 2013. He joined the main Dutch formation, Jumbo, in 2020.

World time trial champion in 2017 on the Norwegian course in Bergen, he notably won three stages of the Tour de France, including two individual times.
