CARCASSONNE, France — Dane Jakob Fuglsang, who is suffering from a broken rib, is giving up on continuing the Tour de France, his team Israel PT announced Monday during the rest day.
Fuglsang crashed on Sunday in the 14th stage and crossed the finish line in Carcassonne more than twenty minutes from the first peloton.
“It’s better to unplug the plug, go home and recover,” said the rider who had x-rays on Sunday after the stage.
“I’ve tried running with a broken rib before, fighting and going all the way. But, in this case, I know I have nothing to gain by trying to hang on,” added the Dane. “I know it’s too painful to continue, so it’s my only option.”
Fuglsang, 37, was in 59th place overall, more than an hour and a half behind the yellow jersey worn by his compatriot Jonas Vingegaard.
The double winner of the Critérium du Dauphiné (2017, 2019) was third in the Tour de Suisse last month.
