(Barcelona) Tour of Spain organizers announced on Monday that the 2023 event will kick off in Barcelona, returning to the city after an 11-year absence.
Barcelona will host the official start of the race with a time trial that will take place entirely in the Catalan city. The second stage will also end in Barcelona.
We have to go back to 2012 to note the last time the Tour of Spain stopped in Barcelona. The ninth stage of the race had gone from Andorra to Montjuïc.
Barcelona hosted the official start of the Tour of Spain in 1962. They hosted a time trial for the last time in 1978, also in Montjuïc.
This year, the first three stages of the Tour of Spain will take place in the Netherlands. The presence of the race in this country was initially planned for 2020, but it did not take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
