An all-Canadian duel took place for the bronze medal in the women’s individual sprint on Friday at the World Track Cycling Championships. Lauriane Genest opposed her teammate and Olympic champion Kelsey Mitchell, who finally got the better of the Quebecer to deprive her of a place on the podium.
Both races between the Canadian cyclists were hotly contested at the Stab Vélodrome in Roubaix, France. Mitchell emerged victorious in the first game by 0.087 seconds, then triumphed in the second thanks to a 0.05 second lead.
In the semi-final, Lauriane Genest faced the German Lea Friedrich. After losing the first set by 0.102 seconds, the Canadian was unable to edge her opponent in the next round, closing the door on each of her attacks.
Friedrich then lost in the final to her compatriot Emma Hinze, who at the same time retained her title of world champion.
Last year, at the Berlin Worlds, Lauriane Genest was ranked 11and individual sprint.
This time, she is participating in her first competition since the Tokyo Olympics. She will complete the Roubaix World Championships with the keirin on Sunday, an event in which she won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Games.
