Jesse Rodriguez defeated Carlos Cuadras by unanimous decision on Saturday night to claim the vacant WBC super flyweight title in Phoenix, Arizona.
Rodriguez (15-0, 10 KOs) appeared at the last minute as an opponent for Cuadras (39-5-1, 27 KOs) who was to face Srisaket Sor Rungvisai beforehand. The latter withdrew due to a virus.
Cuadras was surprised in the third round as he was knocked down at that point. Rodriguez continued his momentum and the judges handed out unequivocal cards to crown him the winner. He inherited scores of 117-110, 117-110 and 115-112 in this fight for the vacant title.
Earlier in the evening, WBA bantamweight champion Jamie Mitchell knocked down Carly Skelly (4-1-1) in four rounds. Mitchell (8-0-2, 5 K.-O.) sent her rival to the floor in the first and second round before seeing the official put an end to the confrontation after 1 min 32 seconds of the fourth round.
