Canelo defeated Golovkin. Didn’t make it to the top but looked great

Saul Alvarez defeated Gennady Golovkin once again. For the second time out of three, the Mexican fighter won, this time with no questions asked. Canelo ended his fight against Golovkin with the result he wanted, but was not as confident as he would have liked.

Golovkin did not justify the hopes of fans who sincerely believed in him.

Saul just surpassed Golovkin. Gennady didn’t actually pose any danger

The first two fights were eventful. The fighters boxed well, but as soon as the opportunity arose, they went to the wheelhouse and changed the entire series. I’m not saying these purchases were breathtaking because they both held up very well but looked fun.

The same thing was expected for a while in the third encounter. And all because of Saul’s promise to break the opponent. Canelo literally said that this fight was very important to him and that he would go for the knockout and always look for him. The Mexican understood that after a defeat, ideally, he should return not just as a winner, but as a winner who knocked out one of the most important opponents in his career.

But it can hardly be said that Saul did enough or much for this. Alvarez acted as usual. It was just more aggressive, tougher and faster. Motivated, yes. He really invested in strikes, did not frustrate the opponent, no. But is that enough for a knockout? Absolutely yes, when someone else is in front of you. Definitely not with Golovkin here. Recently, Gennady had a hard time withstanding the blows that other opponents inflicted on his body. All went well with Canelo, however, and Alvarez himself hardly took aim there.

Canelo attacked on the head and took aim there for the entire fight. The left hooks lay well and, in general, quickly Alvarez took everything he could. In the fifth round, a far-right was blown up and it became quite clear that Golovkin could not be knocked down so easily. And at 40, Gennady holds an excellent fist, so it is unrealistic to catch and fill it. Something else needed to be done, but the Mexican didn’t want to do it.

In general, the fight went according to a clear scenario: Alvarez hits, Golovkin takes it. It wasn’t complete destruction, but it was more than a confident victory – yes. Gennady did not have time, and he is everywhere. I couldn’t find the offensive distance, I couldn’t keep up with the opponent on my feet, I couldn’t keep up with the work his body was doing. 40 years is no joke. Ryota Murata, when he himself has been against you for many years and has never been super fast – that’s one thing. When all the motivated Canelo are completely different.

Golovkin was not bad the whole fight. Eventually, Alvarez awoke when he became somewhat physically dependent. Saul began to save energy and open up on points, Golovkin gave the initiative back a little. Maybe he took a lap or two before and after the championship. And here Gennady took it thanks to the speed of the opponent, but not by much, and by the magnificence of the attacks he took his own.

In general, it is controversial that Jonathan Banks is the trainer of a Kazakh athlete. Even before the fight, the American stated that he wanted to see boxing from Golovkin. So he twisted his opponent, boxing it reasonably, as in the first fight. Sounds great, but in the first fight Gennady was 35, not 40, and Golovkin has certainly not improved since then. It’s a weird idea that doesn’t come from the athlete’s condition.

The referees saw an even fight: 116-112, 115-113, 115-113. Is this some kind of debt restitution for past conflicts or what? Golovkin certainly did not lose or even win the first match – they saw a draw. Gennady, most likely, tried for a second draw – they gave Canelo. The Cossacks completely lost in the third fight – they gave a close score.

What will happen now?

Golovkin remains. Yes, at the age of 40 and after such a defeat. Gennady is sure that this is the last series of confrontations with Alvarez. But he is still a middleweight champion (this fight took place in the second middleweight) and there is something to be done and who to box with.

Moreover, Gennady is a champion in two versions and currently does not have any contract with the streamers as it is the last fight on DAZN. Now a fighter that everyone wants to box – you can get two belts at once, beat all Golovkin, and also earn money.

Among the champions are Jermall Charlo and Zhanibek Alimkhanly. And it will be interesting with this and that. It was time to meet the first, and now this struggle is beneficial for the American. A duel with the latter is beneficial for Kazakhstan. Contenders include Erislandy Lara, a regular WBA belt champion, Michael Zerafa, maybe Brian Castaño or Tim Tszyu. All is not bad, but the union is better and there are many opportunities to organize it.

Canelo seeks a rematch with Bivol, only later when the body is healed. In fact, he will wait for the outcome of the meeting with Zurdo Ramirez to understand how to dictate the terms in the negotiations. Tighten it according to your weight, put it in a frame – a regular option. It doesn’t guarantee victory, but it definitely increases the chance. Moreover, Dmitry said that Saul could fall into a category to compete for his titles. And this is, for a moment, the status of absolute world champion.
