Former world champion in the three weight divisions Vasily Lomachenko He explained why he didn’t turn professional after winning his first Olympic gold in 2008.

“All amateur boxers who want to become Olympic champions become pros after winning a gold medal. I think all great amateur champions want to try and become pro champions. I was like that too.

When I won my first Olympic gold medal, I decided to go pro. But I stayed because my father made such a decision. He explained that since Ukraine is not a two-time Olympic champion, I have to go to another Olympics. This is a historical moment.

But I didn’t think about it. I didn’t understand One medal was enough for me because it was my childhood dream. I fell asleep and woke up with this dream, lived with this dream. When I got the gold medal, I was ready for professional boxing. But my father told me we had to do it again. “Okay, it’s okay,” I said in an interview Lomachenko gave to the ESNEWS YouTube channel.

Note that Vasily Lomachenko won two Olympic gold medals: in Beijing in 2008 and in London in 2012.
