Islam Makhachev may not have been facing the opponent he wanted on Saturday, but he still did what he had to do to position himself as the next contender for the UFC lightweight title.

Makhachev overpowered Bobby Green and finished the groundwork for a knockout win. technique in just 3 minutes and 23 seconds in the final of the most recent UFC Fight Night gala in Las Vegas.

“I just want a title fight,” Makhachev said in a post-fight interview. The rest no longer interests me. I want a championship fight. I’m ready. »

Green had fought only two weeks before and had to replace Beneil Dariush with 10 days notice in this final. The originally scheduled matchup against Dariush was to potentially serve as a knockout bout, but the latter suffered a broken leg in practice.

Makhachev, however, may have to wait several months before getting the opportunity to fight for the belt. First, champion Charles Oliveira will defend his crown against Justin Gaethje on May 9 at UFC 274. Then, presumably Makhachev will have his chance against the winner.

“Just tell me where and when,” simply said Makhachev, who predicts a victory for Oliveira.

“Both guys are top level. But Charles has improved his standing game and he’s superior to Justin on the ground. Eventually, Charles will bring him to the ground, take his back and complete the work in the third or second round, ”he analyzes.

If his prediction comes true, in anticipation of a future championship fight, bookmakers already see Makhachev favorite ahead of Oliveira.

Makhachev (21-1) has won 10 straight fights and 11 of his last 12 in the UFC. His last four wins have come before the limit. He is a longtime training partner of ex-lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, who has now coached him since retiring. At 30 today, many expect him to follow in Khabib’s footsteps and grab the title.
