TOKYO, Japan — The IBF and WBA middleweight title unification bout between Kazakh Gennady Golovkin and Japan’s Ryota Murata will take place on April 9 in Saitama, north of Tokyo, Golovkin announced on his Twitter account on Thursday.
“See you in Japan on April 9,” announced the Kazakh, IBF middleweight champion, in a tweet accompanied by a photo where he poses in front of a poster of the fight.
Initially scheduled for December 29 in Saitama, this fight had been postponed after the decision of the Japanese authorities to close the country’s borders in the face of the new variant of COVID-19 Omicron.
Golovkin, 39, IBF middleweight champion, has not fought since his victory by referee stoppage against Poland’s Kamil Szeremeta on December 18, 2020. It was then the 21st victorious defense of his title in the category , a record.
