David Lemieux must finally get back in the ring on May 21 at the Footprint Arena in Phoenix against David Benavidez according to Mike Coppinger of ESPN.
The American media had also indicated last December that this fight at 168 pounds could allow the winner to eventually get into the ring to face Canelo Alvarez. This one must however face Dmitry Bivol and potentially complete his trilogy with Gennady Golovkin this year according to what is reported.
Lemieux (43-4, 35 KOs) is 3-0 since jumping to 168 pounds, but this will be his first real test in this division. The 33-year-old Lemieux hopes his strike force will allow him to annoy Benavidez (25-0, 22 KOs).
He has twice held a 168-pound title and has never suffered defeat once in the ring. He lost his belts after testing positive for doping and missing the weight at a weigh-in.
