Guillermo Rigondeaux’s career could be in serious jeopardy after a pressure cooker exploded in the face of the former unified super bantamweight champion.

Rigondeaux was cooking in his Miami, Florida home when the object left him with severe facial injuries, reports the El Nuevo Herald, citing the boxer’s manager Alex Bornote.

The accident is said to have caused him to lose 80 per cent of his vision, but doctors are hopeful that he will regain his sight, as only the retina would have been affected. The two-time Cuban gold medalist will obviously undergo further examinations over the next few days.

But if the optic nerve turns out to be damaged, doctors have already indicated that an operation would be necessary and the prognosis would then become much less encouraging.

The 41-year-old Rigondeaux lost his last fight by unanimous judges’ decision against Vincent Astrolabio on February 22 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He also lost his previous outing by split decision to John Riel Casimero in August 2021 in California.

In addition to being a unified super bantamweight champion, Rigondeaux also held a bantamweight title. He suffered his only other career loss against Vasiliy Lomachenko, after moving up two weight divisions to cross swords with the talented Ukrainian pugilist.
