Obviously in great shape, Colby Covington controlled his fight against Jorge Masvidal. In his comfort zone, he pushed the fight to the limit to win by unanimous decision of the judges (49-46, 50-44 and 50-45).

It used to be that Covington and Masvidal were best friends and sparring partners, but things are changing fast. As expected, both fighters sprinkled the clash with a lot of arrogance. Once victory was in his pocket, Covington already had his mind elsewhere…

“Now let’s talk business. I took care of the trash on the streets of Miami, now I’m going to take care of the one in Louisiana. Where are you Dustin Poirier? See you soon, you’re next! “, launched Covington in his comments.

For his part, Masvidal certainly didn’t deliver the fight he wanted and he didn’t make excuses after the fight.

“I should have fought harder. I was no good. I didn’t have it today. »

Round one was Covington’s business, who controlled Masvidal to the ground for much of the round. Masvidal was hit in the eye, a sequence that was not penalized, and he looked deranged for part of the round. Masvidal was, however, able to touch Covington a few times late in the round, but nothing enough to steal the onslaught.

Conversely, a good part of the 2and round was fought standing up and both fighters each hit the target solidly in the final minutes of a hard fought round.

As he had done since the beginning of the duel, Covington maintained an excellent rhythm in the 3and round. He managed to bring Masvidal to the ground once more to take control of the round and dictate the flow of the fight. And after a round clearly dominated by Covington, the message was clear in Masvidal’s corner.

“You have to hurt him. Something big has to happen. »

But in front of a Covington in great form, it was a big order. Masvidal remained patient and hit Covington solidly with just over a minute left in the round, but he was unable to use the opportunity to take control of the fight.

When he needed a small miracle in the last round, Masvidal was unable to orchestrate a single good attack.
