Former UFC player Cain Velasquez’s request for release was denied on Monday, a spokesperson for Santa Clara County, Calif., confirmed.
Superior Court Judge Shelyna Brown said the risk was too great given the extreme seriousness of his actions.
“It is clear to the court that this release would pose a great risk, not only to witnesses and plaintiffs, but also to the residents of Santa Clara. »
The former UFC heavyweight champion’s next court date is April 12, as revealed by Holly Baird, communications director for Velasquez’s legal team.
He will not be able to apply for bail again unless the district attorney adds new charges or drops them, Baird added.
Velasquez was arrested on February 28 for attempted murder. He allegedly targeted Harry Eugene Goularte, a man who is suspected of abusing a family member.
Goularte was arrested at a San Martin daycare center and faces charges of lewd acts with a child under 10. The latter claimed not to be the only child in the daycare center to have been dragged into the toilet by the accused.
Goularte was with his father in the vehicle targeted by Velasquez on Monday, and the father was shot.
“Who here would dare to tell a father that you shouldn’t do that? Velasquez attorney Mark Geragos pleaded Monday. Does anyone here find it outrageous that a father was not consulted about releasing a sex offender back into society without bail when Cain cannot to be? This is the kind of thing that people are disgusted with, and rightly so, by our justice system. »
Goularte, 43, was released on February 25 but must remain at home, under surveillance with an electronic bracelet.
