MONTREAL – Those who were salivating at the thought of a clash between the new recruit of Eye of the Tiger Management Mary Spencer and Marie-Ève Dicaire will have to be patient.
After being signed by the Montreal organization last week, the Ontarian had declared in an agreement to The Canadian Press that her goal was to rob the Quebecer of her IBF super-welterweight world champion title.
But Dicaire’s promoter, Yvon Michel, however quickly cut short this possibility, when asked about it by RDS.ca on the sidelines of the gala he presented at the Cabaret du Casino de Montréal on Friday evening and which featured world contender Kim Clavel.
” Not so long ago [le] promoter [de Spencer] said he would never fight between [Simon] Kean and [Oscar] Rivas because he does not do business with our organization, Michel ironically dropped. The biggest obstacle to Dicaire-Spencer would currently be that. »
A quick search did not allow such remarks to be attributed to the big boss of Eye of the Tiger Management Camille Estephan, even if the rivalry between the two Quebec promoters is well known. In October, Estephan told the news writer that there was “mutual interest” in a Kean-Rivas summit meeting, but that he doubted “that the stars are aligned”.
“On the other hand, Marie-Ève has a specific plan: she is going to unification and there are also other big fights that are then on the program, continued Michel. And you have to know another thing about Marie-Ève, she has no intention of fighting until she is 40.
” [Spencer] comes along and no matter what she’s done in the amateur ranks, I think she has to prove herself [chez les professionnelles] previously. When she has made five or six finals as was the case for Marie-Ève, then we can think about starting to think about it. »
Might as well say never, since Spencer – who competed at the 2012 London Olympics and was a three-time amateur world champion – is 37 years old. Her commercial potential in the Belle Province remains extremely limited for the moment and it is very difficult to imagine Estephan organizing the promotion of events around her.
But what would happen if Estephan managed to elevate Spencer to the rank of mandatory contender for Dicaire’s belt? This is a question that no one has an answer to yet!
