“We have a lot in common in terms of sports” – Makhachev on comparison with Nurmagomedov

UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev said he is not bothered by comparisons with former title holder Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Makhachev won 25 victories with one defeat in his career. Nurmagomedov completed his professional career in 2020. He remained undefeated in the Octagon, where he scored 29 victories in 29 fights.

— We have a lot in common in terms of sports. We went through this entire journey together. When his professional career began, I was in the hall, watching him. Then, when I signed the contract, he helped me. Still the same. Something has changed, he is no longer in the corner, in training, at training camps he is always with us.

— Are you okay with comparison?

– Certainly.

– Do you understand that there is no escape from them?

“Yes,” the Match TV website quotes Makhachev as saying.

On October 21, at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi, Makhachev knocked out Australian Alexander Volkanovski in the first round and defended the UFC lightweight championship belt.
