Fighter Jorge Masvidal is accused of attacking UFC rival Colby Covington and causing him a brain injury, according to a court document whose ESPN got a copy.
Masvidal pleaded not guilty to two counts Thursday in Miami. He is charged with aggravated assault and mischief in connection with a March 21 attack in Miami Beach. The court issued a restraining order to Masvidal on Thursday. He therefore cannot approach within 25 feet of Covington.
The assault charge mentions that Masvidal allegedly struck Covington with “a deadly weapon” — his hands and fists — and caused him serious injury (a brain injury).
The mischief charge, meanwhile, states that Masvidal allegedly caused more than $1,000 in damage to Covington’s property, in this case a watch.
Masvidal remains on conditional release. He was released on bail on March 24 following an arrest the previous day. Masvidal’s next court date is scheduled for May 12.
On March 21, Masvidal allegedly punched a man in the face twice outside the Papi Steak restaurant in Miami Beach, according to a police report of the incident obtained by ESPN. The report said the man suffered a broken tooth and $15,000 in damage to his $90,000 Rolex.
Covington’s name was not initially mentioned in authorities’ documents, but it now appears that he was Masvidal’s alleged victim based on court documents.
The police report of the incident indicates that Masvidal allegedly said “You shouldn’t have mentioned my children” to Covington during the incident.
Covington defeated Masvidal by unanimous decision on March 5 at UFC 272.
