Is sport outside of politics? Azerbaijan to miss European Boxing Championship for the first time in its history
The Azerbaijan Boxing Federation board meeting was held and it was decided not to participate in the Men’s European Boxing Championship, which will be held in Yerevan on May 21-31.
The decision is reportedly linked to the upcoming elections to the International Boxing Association in May, fees and training programs for athletes for the World Boxing Championship, and other sensitive issues.
It should be noted that for the first time in the history of European men’s boxing championships, Azerbaijan will not participate in the tournament.
As for “sensitive issues”, Azerbaijan and Armenia claim Nagorno-Karabakh lands in the Southern Caucasus. In 2020, the Second Karabakh War took place – Azerbaijan recaptured a significant part of the territories captured by Armenia during the first campaign of 1987-94.
