Italian boxer bursts into tears after losing to Algerian with elevated testosterone levels at Olympic boxing tournament

Italian Angela Carini burst into tears after refusing to continue her 1/8 final boxing match in the 66 kg weight category against Algerian Iman Khelif at the Olympic Games in Paris.
Carini withdrew from the fight in the first round. According to il Fatto Quotidiano, the Italian athlete complained in her corner that the blows were too painful. Khelif’s next opponent will be the winner of the match between Marissa Williamson (Australia) and Lutsa Hamori (Hungary).
In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Khelif and Lin Yuting (Taiwan) during the World Championships in India due to failure to meet the eligibility criteria. A gender test showed that the athletes had XY chromosomes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed them to compete in women’s competitions in 2024.
Boxing competitions at the Olympics are organised by a special unit created by the IOC. In June 2023, the IOC Session voted by a majority to exclude the IBA from the Olympic movement.
The Olympics in the capital of France will end on August 11.
