Italian Angela Carini has announced that she is ending her boxing career after losing to Algerian Iman Khelif at the Paris Olympics.

The 1/8 final fight in the 66 kg weight category between Carini and Khelif took place on Thursday. The Italian burst into tears after refusing to continue the fight. In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Khelif and Lin Yuting (Taiwan) during the World Championships in India due to failure to meet the eligibility criteria. A gender test showed that the athletes have XY chromosomes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed them to compete in women’s competitions in 2024.

— I asked myself: who is in front of me? But it is not for me to decide. I also feel sorry for her, there is a media boom around us. Who are we to judge? To say what is right and what is wrong? We are athletes, we are not judges. For me, this is not a defeat. I did not lose, I just consciously gave up. I am leaving with my head held high, and now I am saying goodbye to boxing, — RT quotes Karini as saying, citing La Stampa.

Boxing competitions at the Olympics are organised by a special unit created by the IOC. In June 2023, the IOC Session voted by a majority to exclude the IBA from the Olympic movement.

The Olympic Games will end on August 11.
