Amar Khelif, the father of Algerian Olympic boxer Iman Khelif, showed documents and childhood photos of the athlete to prove she is a woman, the Daily Mail reports.
According to the publication, Khelif showed a birth certificate dated May 2, 1999, which confirms that Iman was born a girl.
– The attacks on her are immoral, it is unfair. Iman is a little girl who has loved sports since she was six, she played football. This criticism and rumors are aimed at destabilizing Iman, they do not want her to become an Olympic champion.
In the ring she will prove them wrong and I hope she will bring glory to Algeria and the Arab countries and win a gold medal. She is our role model, said Amar Khelif.
On Thursday, Italian Angela Carini refused to continue her 1/8 final boxing match in the 66 kg weight category against Khelif at the 2024 Olympics. Carini fell to her knees and burst into tears right in the ring. On Friday, it became known that the Italian had decided to end her career.
In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Khelif and Lin Yuting (Taiwan) during the World Championships in India due to not meeting the eligibility criteria. A gender test showed that the athletes had XY chromosomes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed them to compete in women’s competitions in 2024.
