The first Olympic champion in the history of Iran died
The Olympic Champion in freestyle wrestling Imam Ali Khabibi died at the 95th year of his life, the press service of the Iranian Federation of Wrestling reports.
“The country’s wrestling community expresses condolences to the family of the deceased,” the report said.
According to the IRNA agency, Khabibi died in a hospital in the city of Caamshehr in the northern province of Mazenderan after a long illness. He was in medical institutions because of breathing problems and heart for more than 50 days.
Habi was the first in the history of Iran by the Olympic champion, winning the gold of the 1956 Games in Melbourne in the weight category up to 67 kg. He also won the three world championships, became the champion of Asian Games. After his career was completed, Habibi worked as a coach, was engaged in politics. In 2007, he was introduced into the Hall of Glory of the International Federation of United Struggle styles (Fila, now the United World of Wrestling, UWW).
