Fighter Romero – about Buvaysar Saitiev: “We all learned from this great master. His passing is a huge pain for the Olympic community.”
Former UFC middleweight fighter Yoel Romero said that he learned to fight following the example of three-time Olympic champion in freestyle wrestling, Russian Buvaysar Saitiev, noting that his death is a great loss for the Olympic community.
Saitiev won Olympic gold in freestyle wrestling three times: 1996 in Atlanta (USA), 2000 in Sydney (Australia), 2004 in Athens (Greece).
On March 2, 2025, the 49-year-old athlete died of cardiac arrest.
“We all learned from this great master.” Now he is no longer with us. We hope he is in a better place now. He left a huge mark on the history of the Olympic Games. His passing is a huge pain for his family and for the entire Olympic community. It was a great honor for me to come to his land with his image on the T-shirt. It was the minimum I could do to respect his memory,” a Match TV correspondent reports Romero’s words.
