John Wood, coach of ex-UFC champion Merab Dvalishvili, summed up the results of his defeat to Russian Petr Yan in the title fight.
Yan defeated Dvalishvili in the main fight at the tournament in Las Vegas. After five rounds, the judges unanimously gave victory to the Russian, who became the UFC bantamweight champion.
— As the battle progressed, I thought that we were winning and controlling the situation. But we must admit that the brightest moments of the fight remained with Petr Yan, and perhaps this influenced the judges’ verdict. There was blood on Merab’s face, the damage that Peter inflicted on him was visible, it all added up to the final result. My fault is that I did not pay attention to this during the battle. After the fight, it was like I woke up from a nightmare. These things are not easy to go through.
Should Dvalishvili have given up his fourth defense in a row in one year? No, I don’t think so. This man strives for greatness. He does special things because he wants to be the best. “I think this is just one chapter in the story that will ultimately turn out to be something good for him,” MMA Fighting quotes Wood.
