Nigerian police have charged Joshua’s driver in connection with the fatal crash.
The driver of former WBA, WBO, IBF heavyweight champion Briton Anthony Joshua has been charged with four counts in connection with the accident, including causing death by dangerous driving, the BBC reports, citing statements from the Nigerian police.
The accident occurred on Monday, December 29, on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The Lexus SUV Joshua was in collided with a stationary truck. According to the preliminary version of the investigation, the accident occurred due to a burst tire when the Lexus exceeded the speed limit on this section of the road. In addition to Joshua and the driver, there were two other people in the car who died on the spot. The British boxer, who won gold at the 2012 Olympics, suffered minor injuries as a result of the accident.
Adeniyi’s driver, Mobolaji Kayode, appeared in court on Friday, the newspaper reported. Prosecutors have charged Kayode with four counts of causing death by dangerous driving, reckless driving, driving without due care and driving without a valid driver’s license.
The defendant was given bail in the amount of $3.5 thousand. Kayode has been remanded in custody pending the fulfillment of bail conditions. The case will be heard on January 20.
