Jon Jones: Makhachev is definitely one of the greatest fighters of all time
American Jon Jones, a former UFC champion in the heavy and light heavyweight categories, called the holder of the welterweight belt, Russian Islam Makhachev, one of the greatest fighters of all time.
Makhachev finished 2025 in first place in the UFC rankings, regardless of weight categories. The Russian topped the P4P rankings in mid-November after defeating Australian Jack Della Maddalena in the welterweight division at UFC 322 in New York. He became the first fighter from Russia and the 11th in the history of the promotion to win two championship belts. Prior to this, the Russian vacated the title of champion of the organization in the lightweight division, which is now held by Ilia Topuria.
“Islam is definitely one of the greatest fighters of all time. He is an outstanding athlete. Some people are cut out to do great things, and he’s one of those guys. I’m interested in watching his career. He still has a lot to do, but he’s on the right track. He’s one of the guys I have a lot of respect for in this sport,” Jones said in an interview with Red Corner MMA.
34-year-old Makhachev has 28 victories and one defeat in mixed martial arts.
