Ukrainian champion boxer accepts Polish citizenship for high-profile fights
WBC International Middleweight Champion Fedor Cherkashin He confessed why he decided to apply for Polish citizenship.
“You know, there was such an opportunity because I am of Polish origin. But in order to box in the main fights on Polish television, you had to have citizenship. So at that time I could not reach a higher level than I was boxing at.
I competed in the main events; for example, when you box before the main event of the evening. And I realized that something had to be done.
I see my life in Poland since I moved to Poland in 2017. I realized that I built my life on sports. Warsaw became the place where I wanted to live and work as an athlete.
In 2020, my career really started to gain momentum and I was told I needed to go to the main fights. And television again gives the main fights only when you have citizenship.
That’s why I replaced the Pole Card with Polish citizenship. I did not renounce Ukrainian citizenship; I just applied for Polish citizenship.
And already in 2020 I was given the opportunity to fight the main fight in Warsaw. This also allowed me to attract sponsors to my team, new people joined. As a result, this gave me a certain recognition; They started to know me in Poland, and not only in the boxing community,” said Cherkashin.
