Anthony Joshua’s family has asked Nigerian prosecutors to release the boxer’s driver accused of a serious road accident.

The family of the former WBA, WBO, IBF heavyweight world champion, British Anthony Joshua, has appealed to the law enforcement and judicial authorities of Nigeria with a request to release the driver of the athlete accused of an accident with the dead, journalist Esegbona Louis reports.

According to the source, the British boxer’s relatives have no complaints against Adeniyi’s driver Mobolaji Kayode. They also ask that the accused not be kept in prison, since “just because something bad happened does not mean that a person should lose his life.”

The accident occurred on Monday, December 29, on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The Lexus SUV Joshua was in collided with a stationary truck. According to the preliminary version of the investigation, the accident occurred due to a burst tire when the Lexus exceeded the speed limit on this section of the road. In addition to Joshua and the driver, there were two other people in the car who died on the spot. The British boxer, who won gold at the 2012 Olympics, suffered minor injuries as a result of the accident.

According to media reports, Nigerian prosecutors have charged Kayode with four counts of causing death by dangerous driving, reckless driving, driving without due care and driving without a valid driver’s license.

The defendant was given bail in the amount of $3.5 thousand. Kayode has been remanded in custody pending the fulfillment of bail conditions. The hearing of the case was postponed from January 20 to February 25.

Joshua defeated American blogger Jake Paul on December 19 in a fight in Miami. In total, 36-year-old Joshua has 29 wins and four losses in his career.
