Since the start of her reign as flyweight champion, Valentina Shevchenko has never looked more human than on Saturday night at UFC 275 in Singapore.
All credit goes to Taila Santos. Perhaps hesitant to face the power of Santos, Shevchenko had a game plan to take the action to the ground. The problem was that Santos was as strong as her and she even managed to take the top position several times after attempted takedowns from Shevchenko.
The latter still retained her title with a split decision. It wasn’t a robbery, but the judge who gave Santos the win wasn’t wrong either. It’s arguable that she possibly won three of the five rounds, and despite a head-to-head clash that left only one eye completely open from swelling from the end of the fourth bout, Santos held on. struggled and fought well.
For all these reasons, Santos should get a rematch against Shevchenko. Especially since there are no other aspirants who really stand out.
Shevchenko might be open to the idea, as she is surely not happy with her performance, her worst since becoming champion.
Prochazka, an inventive new champion
The UFC has a dozen champions, but probably none as inventive as the most recent to be enshrined, light heavyweight Jiri Prochazka.
The 29-year-old Czech had only made two appearances in the octagon before earning a title fight in the UFC. He snatched the title from veteran Glover Teixeira after five rounds yesterday.
Although he mostly threw strikes from every possible angle throughout the fight, he eventually beat the champion at his own game with a rear choke at the jiu-jitsu master’s expense with 28 seconds left as the contender was on course to lose on the scorecard.
Prochazka got stuck in bad ground positions for long periods of time, but he still defended well and managed to get back up, something few of Teixeira’s rivals have been able to do in the past. . Once on his feet, he threw punches that could have knocked down many fighters without Teixeira’s resistance.
The new 205-pound champion could stay that way for a long time. The next ones who will challenge him for the belt will have difficulty finding training partners who can replicate his style.
Weili couldn’t have done better
We expected a lot from Zhang Weili on Saturday, she is not one of the best fighters on the planet for nothing. She is at the peak of her form and was the favorite against Joanna Jedrzejczyk. But she gave an even better performance than expected and it was a great show, which is good for the 115-pound division.
Jedrzejczyk announced his retirement after his defeat. The Pole was driven and fought to the max of her ability as she has done her entire career, except Zhang was just plain dominant. Her wrestling was impressive and she demonstrated her physical strength, with her sense of timing.
The Chinese finished the duel with creativity on an overhand punch, but also a risk factor. She will surely be the favorite when she takes on new champion strawweight Carla Esparza. Let’s see if she can take the belt back and have a long reign afterwards, she has the potential.
