Australian Jai Opetaia dethroned IBF light-heavyweight champion Maris Breidis by winning by unanimous decision of the judges on Saturday in Broadbeach, Australia.
Despite a broken cheek suffered during the fight, Opetaia (22-0) was unfazed and was declared the winner by all three judges (116-112, 116-112 and 115-113).
Briedis (28-2), who was making the second defense of his belt, was aggressive at the start of the fight, but suffered a cut to his right eye in the first round. Opetaia meanwhile really started from the fourth assault thanks to clever uppercuts.
Briedis recovered a bit in the seventh round, but Opetaia quickly responded with solid and precise combinations. It was a second career loss for the 37-year-old Latvian, who also lost to Oleksandr Usyk in the final of the World Boxing Super Series light heavyweight tournament in January 2018.
