SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Rey Vargas was able to make up for a ninth-round visit to the mat and beat Mark Magsayo by the judges’ split decision (115-112, 113-114, and 115-112). At the same time, Vargas becomes the new WBC featherweight champion, a title that was held by Magsayo.

After a good start to the fight, Vargas (36-0) was hit by a good right to the chin from Magsayo (24-1). It seemed to take some time before he regained his senses. He came back strong in the 11th round, however, and both boxers raised their arms in celebration as the fight ended.

The judges’ favor ultimately went to Vargas, who remains undefeated in 36 professional fights.

For his part, Magsayo takes a first defeat in his 25th fight. He was defending his WBC featherweight title for the first time.
