Nikita Bazhenov sees nothing wrong with appointing Paul Ashworth to Spartak

Former Red-White striker Nikita Bazhenov told why Paul Ashworth should be given a chance at Spartak.

On Thursday, the general director of Spartak, Evgeny Melezhikov, announced that a foreigner would become the new sports director of the club. Later, Metaratings.ru reported that Ashworth was applying for the position, which Italian Luca Cattani left in mid-July. Sources of the “Championship” confirmed this information.

– In Spartak, it seems, there will be a new sports director – Paul Ashworth. Everything would be fine, but he has a very bad reputation.

– I hear about the reputation for the first time. This is probably your opinion on this matter, Bazhenov told KP Sport.

— Criminal cases in Kazakhstan for exceeding official powers are quite real.

I’m just not very competent in this matter. People who decide to invite such specialists should be held accountable. On the other hand, I have always said that one should not indiscriminately attack a person. I would like to see how it works and what results after it will or will not. After that will draw conclusions.

– Then the general question: is a foreigner in such a position okay?

“For the most part, I don’t care. First of all, a person must be competent. And conclusions on it should not be done after one game. What is the logic: conditionally, a player plays one game poorly – you don’t need to kick him out right away. If there is a negative trend, a player plays poorly for a long time, he leaves. The same goes for all leadership positions. I don’t really like to attack people right away.

– Where should Ashworth start in Spartak?

— Classic functionality: re-signing contracts, preparing new transfers. I would really like to see how he will revive Spartak-2. It seems that they said that there would be a “two”. And this is a very big job. There is something to do there.

Akhmat denied interest in the possible departure of Jikia and Gundry

General director of the football club “Akhmat” Akhmed Aydamirov has denied the club’s interest in the Turkish defender from Antalyaspor Georgy Dzhikia and the possible departure of the Grozny defender Nadera Gundry to one of the Qatari teams. Aidamirov’s comment is quoted by Sport-Express.

“We are not negotiating Jikia’s transition. Just because something is written somewhere doesn’t mean it’s true. We had no proposals for Gundry. He has a valid contract with us and is at the club,” Aidamirov said.

Jikia is 32 years old, he moved to Antalyaspor in 2025, this season the player played 13 matches in which he scored 2 goals. His last club in Russia was Khimki near Moscow; before that he played for Spartak Moscow. With the red and white team he won the Russian Championship (2017), the Cup (2022) and the National Super Cup (2017). Dzhikia played 44 matches for the Russian national team, scoring 2 goals and giving 1 assist. As part of the national team, the footballer played at the Confederations Cup (2017) and the European Championship (2021).

Gundry is 30 years old, moved to Akhmat in 2024 and played 63 games for the club, in which he scored five goals. Previously, the player won the Belgian Cup with Antwerp (2019/20), became champion of Tunisia (2014/15) and the Tunisian Cup (2017) with Club Africain. The defender also played for Belgian Westerlo, Bulgarian Slavia, French Drancy and Arles-Avignon and emirate Ajman. Defender of the Ukrainian national team: “This will be the match of our lives”

On March 26, the Ukrainian team will play the semi-final play-off match against the Swedish team in the World Cup qualifiers. Expectations from this confrontation in an exclusive interview with the site Spor.ua said the captain of our team Nikolay Matvienko.

“I think this is the strongest team we can get,” Matvienko said. – Right now everyone is focused on the situation of the Swedes. But our meeting will take place in two months. Everything can change. Sweden has a very strong squad and many of their players represent elite European clubs. They, like us, set the goal of getting to the World Championship, so a very tough challenge awaits us.

For me, the poor performance of the Swedes in the qualifying tournament means nothing. Every team can do their best in a match, even if it is an outsider, and Sweden is one of the strong European teams, that’s for sure.

For the Ukrainian national team, this will be a match of life, like all previous matches. After all, we understand that a war is going on in the country and every victory, even on the sports front, brings joy to Ukrainians in such a difficult period.
