Former Lokomotiv Moscow defender Dmitry Sennikov told Sport Day after Day that the Russian national team, in light of the suspension from international tournaments, needs to play friendly matches more often so that the coaching staff understands the level of the players.
Earlier on Tuesday, the press service of the RFU announced that the Russian team would not be allowed to qualify for the European Championship 2024.
– The Russian team will be without official matches for two years. What to do in such a situation?
– This is a very long time. Play friendly games. I do not envy the current generation, which misses its best years. But there are clubs where you need to continue to play at a high level. Every footballer is a player, for him the most important thing is to play.
– Does it make sense to hold training camps of the national team in these two years?
– You need to play friendly matches. It is also pleasant for the players themselves to understand at what level the footballer himself is. A call to the national team is an assessment of your skill level. We must not forget about the team. And if there is an opportunity to hold friendly matches, then we should use it,” Sennikov said.
On September 24, the Russian team will play a friendly match with Kyrgyzstan.
EURO 2024 will take place in Germany from 14 June to 14 July.
