Cantona unsuccessfully tried to become president of Manchester United
Former Manchester United striker Eric Cantona tried to become president of the club from Manchester. However, club executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward turned down the offer made to him by the club legend.
The ex-footballer said he was trying to take on a new role on the club’s board of directors. The Frenchman suggested dividing the figure of the president in two. One will be the authoritative voice on football and the other on the economic and financial matters of the club.
“Woodward is very good in marketing, but not in football. I think there should be one head for administration / marketing and another for football, who is responsible for all decisions in football, which is why I ran for this position,” Cantona quotes The Athletic.
Cantona played for England from 1992 to 1997. As part of Manchester United, he won the English championship four times, twice won the Cup and five times – in the Super Bowl of the country.
