The Qatari authorities have spent $200 billion to organize the 2022 FIFA World Cup, according to The Sun.
As the newspaper notes, of this amount, only 6.5 billion went to the construction of stadiums, bases for teams and infrastructure for fans. Several arenas were built for the tournament.
At the same time, Russia’s expenses for hosting the 2018 World Cup are estimated at 11.6 billion. The Brazilian 2014 World Cup was more expensive – 15 billion. The costs for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea amounted to seven billion, the 2006 World Cup in Germany – 4.3 billion, the 2010 World Cup in South Africa – at 3.6 billion.
– The World Cup is part of Qatar’s national vision for 2030, a broader government strategy aimed at intensive development of cities and industry, as well as education and healthcare systems. The $200 billion figure often associated with the World Cup is actually part of this ambitious strategy for Qatar’s national development and modernization.
Most of these large-scale infrastructure projects that teams and fans will benefit from in 2022, such as new roads, metros, airports, hotels and other tourist facilities, were planned even before we received the right to host the World Cup,” explained tournament communications executive director Fatma Al Nuaimi.
The 2022 World Cup will be held in Qatar from November 20 to December 18. The Russian national team was suspended from the play-offs of the tournament due to the situation in Ukraine.
