The match of the Argentine championship was interrupted due to a collision at the entrance to the stadium. There were no casualties.
The relationship between fans and the police in football throughout modern history is far from warm – incidents with sad consequences regularly occur around the world.
No sooner had the world moved away from the tragedy in Indonesia, where almost 200 people died as a result of a stampede after the match and inadequate actions of law enforcement officers, as another police lawlessness led to a terrible incident in Argentina.
Due to the actions of the police, who used rubber bullets and tear gas against the fans, the Argentine championship match was interrupted.
Unfortunately, there were no casualties…
“My 2 year old son couldn’t breathe”
On October 7, at the very beginning of the meeting of the 23rd round of the second phase of the Argentinean Examples between the Gimnasia and Esgrima and Boca Juniors clubs, the referees interrupted the game due to tear gas that entered the stadium bowl. At that time, at the entrance to the arena, a conflict between an angry crowd and the police was raging with might and main – some of the fans could not get to the match, although they had tickets in their hands. The indignation of the fans turned into a brawl, which the police decided to stop using harsh methods.
Law enforcement officers fired rubber bullets and tear gas at the crowd, which eventually hit the field and affected the players, coaching staff and referees, as well as fans in the stands. Already in the ninth minute of the first half, the referee Hernan Mastranhelo interrupted the meeting, which they subsequently decided not to finish.
My 2 year old son couldn’t breathe because of the tear gas. We feel despair and worry about all the people in the stands. This is madness. We played a regular football match, everything almost turned into a huge tragedy, we had a feeling that our relatives could die, one of the fans told ESPN.
One death is known
Unfortunately, the conflict between the police and the fans led to a tragedy: a 57-year-old man died of cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital. Boca Juniors has already issued a statement:
We regret the passing of Cesar Regueiro, a supporter of the team, who died after an incident outside the stadium. Our sincere condolences to his family and friends. We condemn these actions and call for deep reflection on the situation,” the club said in a statement.
It is difficult to say whether such harsh actions of the police against the fans were justified. The hot temper of Latin Americans is known to the whole world, the news of a skirmish at a football stadium is no surprise there. However, as Boca Juniors rightly noted, all those involved should think carefully about such a situation.
