Switzerland’s federal prosecutor’s office has filed an appeal demanding that the country’s federal criminal court overturn the acquittals of former FIFA president Sepp Blatter and former UEFA chief Michel Platini on corruption charges, Reuters reports citing the agency.
The Swiss federal criminal court acquitted Blatter and Platini in July after a seven-year investigation that resulted in both being suspended from the sport.
According to the judge, the report of FIFA’s “gentlemen’s agreement” to pay Platini $1.99 million for consulting is credible, and there are serious doubts about the prosecution’s claim that it was a fraudulent payment.
Blatter, 86, and Platini, 67, faced a large fine or imprisonment for up to five years. The prosecutor’s office then said that it would study the written verdict before deciding whether to file an appeal against the mentioned defendants.
