Former Norwegian and Premier League footballer jailed for tax evasion
Former Norway and Premier League striker John Carew has been sentenced by the Oslo District Court to 14 months in prison for tax evasion.
The 43-year-old ex-footballer was found guilty of failing to report taxable income of 12.8 million crowns and assets of 307 million crowns during 2014-2019.
According to local media, Carew told the Norwegian tax authorities that he lived in the UK during the period in question and therefore was not required to pay taxes in the Scandinavian country. But during the trial, prosecutors produced evidence, including credit card receipts, that showed he was in Norway for more than 183 days a year during that period, which technically made him a resident of Norway and therefore liable to pay taxes.
Carew is known for playing for Aston Villa, Valencia and Lyon.
