The Belgian Football Federation has decided not to open a fan zone for the 2022 World Cup due to low fan interest in the tournament in Qatar.
– Since most of the fans did not manage to go to Qatar for the World Cup, we planned to bring the tournament home to them, but we sold far fewer tickets than planned. The current interest in the tournament in front of big screens is much less than in previous years, AP quotes Manu Leroy, head of marketing and communications of the Belgian Football Federation.
It is noted that less than a thousand tickets were sold to the fan zone, the price of which did not exceed $10. Fans who have already purchased tickets will be reimbursed.
The World Cup will be held in Qatar from November 20 to December 18. The Belgian national team got into group F, where they will play with Croatia and Morocco, and will begin their performance at the tournament with a match against Canada, which will be held on November 23.
The Match TV channel became the exclusive owner of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Russia. As part of an agreement with FIFA, Match TV received the opportunity to broadcast live, use fragments of games on television, broadcast and use highlights on digital platforms, as well as sell advertising inventory in broadcasts. All 64 matches of the tournament will be shown on the platforms of Match TV channels.
