The International Football Federation (FIFA) has confirmed that Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo did not touch the ball in the episode with the first goal against Uruguay in the group stage match of the World Cup in Qatar, ESPN reported, citing a statement from the organization.
The meeting of the second round of group H ended with the score 2:0. Fernandes scored a brace, scoring in the 54th minute and converting a penalty in the 90+3rd. The first goal was first recorded on Cristiano Ronaldo, but subsequently FIFA changed the author of the ball, believing that Ronaldo did not touch the ball after the Fernandes pass.
“In the match between Portugal and Uruguay, using the Connected Ball technology placed in the official ball of the World Cup, we can definitively prove that Cristiano Ronaldo had no contact with the ball at the first goal of the game.
The 500 Hz sensor inside the ball allows us to be very precise in our analysis,” the statement said.
The Portuguese national team scored 6 points and advanced to the playoffs of the World Cup in Qatar. In the final third round of Group H, the Portuguese will play with the team of South Korea.
