Fans and players will not like the transition of the RFU to the Asian Confederation, Zhurova believes

Football players and fans will not like the transition to the Asian Confederation, State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova believes.

The meeting of the executive committee of the RFU will be held at the House of Football in Moscow on Friday. One of the items on the agenda will be the discussion of the transfer of the RFU from UEFA to the AFC.

– When the USSR collapsed, all the sports federations of our country decided that we would remain in Europe. Although a number of former republics of the Soviet Union have decided that some of their federations will be in Europe, and some in Asia. As far as I know, according to the rules, it was possible to move from one confederation to another at any time, and any of our federations could do so. We just always had uniformity, so we all ended up in Europe. But if the RFU decides today in favor of Asia, and will they be more comfortable playing there in terms of experience and competitiveness? Let’s see how it will be, there can be any solution, it can be as an intermediate, temporary.

In general, I heard that UEFA is going to let us hold some kind of youth competition in 2023, some kind of football tournament. So far, we are only discussing the transition to Asia and the expediency of this. We have been playing at the Euro all our lives, we have never participated in the Asian Games and have never been there.

Can the holding of an executive committee specifically on the topic of moving to Asia provoke UEFA to return our federation to the international arena as soon as possible? Well, we are holding this meeting not for some kind of pressure, but to discuss and decide how it will be better for our athletes. Instead of worrying about what UEFA thinks about this, stop looking at others. It is understandable that the fans will say: “What kind of experience can we get in Asia? Here, playing with European teams is another matter.” Let’s be honest, the fans and the players themselves probably won’t like this change too much,” Zhurova told Metaratings.ru.

Calls to remove Russia’s partners sound like desperation – Svishchev

Requests by Ukrainian officials to impose sanctions against Russia’s partners after the renewed admission of Russian athletes to competitions do not find understanding and seem like a gesture of desperation. This opinion was expressed by the first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports Dmitry Svishchev.

Former president of the Ukrainian Football Federation Andrei Shevchenko called for sanctions and the removal from participation in sports competitions of representatives of countries supporting Russia.

“These are already some gestures of desperation. Our athletes are increasingly allowed to participate in international competitions; there are no conflicts or boycotts. Athletes even communicate with each other, this does not bring negative consequences. The appeals of Ukrainians to remove our athletes from every part of the world no longer find understanding among appropriate sports officials. Therefore, such appeals already seem desperate,” Svishchev said.

Shevchenko made statements about the Ukraine-Sweden match in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers

UAF President Andrey Shevchenko He talked about the match against the Swedish national team in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

“When we were drawn against Sweden we probably faced our toughest opponent. I have great respect for Swedish football, you have always had good national teams and great players.”

“It’s always difficult to face Scandinavian teams, even though you don’t qualify for the World Cup, because you have so much quality, character and identity. This is similar to us to some extent. I don’t think there are favourites. In the end it all depends on the details, the injury situation and the preparations,” said Shevchenko.

In case of victory, Ukraine will play with the winner of the Poland-Albania doubles for a ticket to the World Cup. Ukraine will play the final match at home on March 31, again conditionally.

In addition to the 12 teams that finished second in their groups, the 4 winners of the Nations League quartet will also participate in the play-offs. All 16 participants are divided into 4 paths. Each route will include a semi-final and a final. The semi-finals will be held on March 26, and the finals will be held on March 31, 2026.
