Lawyer Sergei Lysenko on Match TV explained why the Russian Football Union (RFU) must decide on the decision to withdraw from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) by December 31, 2022.

RFU President Alexander Dyukov said last week that the final decision on a possible transition to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) would be made on December 27. Earlier it became known that the voting of the executive committee of the RFU on this issue was postponed again and should take place before the end of the year. A member of the executive committee of the RFU, Alexander Zotov, in a conversation with Match TV, said that the organization could not yet agree on the time when they would announce a decision on a possible transfer to the AFC.

– According to UEFA regulations, a notification must be sent six months before the end of the financial year. The financial year ends June 30, 2023. Accordingly, the RFS notification must be submitted by the end of 2022. And there will be six months to formally withdraw from UEFA.

Nothing prevents to return back to UEFA. Then it will be necessary to leave the Asian Confederation back, request entry into UEFA. But in fact, I think everyone understands that returning to UEFA will be difficult. Because the RFU will leave it now for some reason. So the question is, why then come back. And secondly, it is obvious that a certain number of European associations will be against the return,” the lawyer said on Match TV.
