“Pele had eyes on his back. So we talked about Streltsov “- Gadzhi Gadzhiev

Russian football coach Gadzhi Gadzhiev shared his memories of the legendary Brazilian football player Pele.

Pele passed away on Thursday at the age of 82 after battling colon cancer. Earlier it became known that the body of the Brazilian stopped responding to chemotherapy.

– Previously, there was no talk about people like Maradona or Cruyff, Ronaldo or Messi – then no one said anything at all. Pele was an order of magnitude higher than everyone else, and they called him the king! He is a unique person who could play not only individual episodes: he is a tactician, and a techie, and a strategist, and anyone – all rolled into one. And played at the top! Such a feeling was created that he was from a cat breed – so coordinated and easily oriented in the air, below, in front of you or behind your back. I say this, recalling the episodes that are imprinted in my memory. So we talked about Streltsov, that he has eyes on his back. Pele did the same.

Or, for example, when the ball flies high, he takes it on his chest, while turning around without landing on two legs, and puts the other one and a half to two meters further. All these episodes are a characteristic of his extraordinary coordination abilities, – Gadzhiev told the Championship.

Pele is the only three-time world football champion (1958, 1962, 1970). He played 92 matches for Brazil and scored 77 goals. At the club level, the striker played for the Brazilian Santos and New York Cosmos.

Calls to remove Russia’s partners sound like desperation – Svishchev

Requests by Ukrainian officials to impose sanctions against Russia’s partners after the renewed admission of Russian athletes to competitions do not find understanding and seem like a gesture of desperation. This opinion was expressed by the first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports Dmitry Svishchev.

Former president of the Ukrainian Football Federation Andrei Shevchenko called for sanctions and the removal from participation in sports competitions of representatives of countries supporting Russia.

“These are already some gestures of desperation. Our athletes are increasingly allowed to participate in international competitions; there are no conflicts or boycotts. Athletes even communicate with each other, this does not bring negative consequences. The appeals of Ukrainians to remove our athletes from every part of the world no longer find understanding among appropriate sports officials. Therefore, such appeals already seem desperate,” Svishchev said.

Shevchenko made statements about the Ukraine-Sweden match in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers

UAF President Andrey Shevchenko He talked about the match against the Swedish national team in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

“When we were drawn against Sweden we probably faced our toughest opponent. I have great respect for Swedish football, you have always had good national teams and great players.”

“It’s always difficult to face Scandinavian teams, even though you don’t qualify for the World Cup, because you have so much quality, character and identity. This is similar to us to some extent. I don’t think there are favourites. In the end it all depends on the details, the injury situation and the preparations,” said Shevchenko.

In case of victory, Ukraine will play with the winner of the Poland-Albania doubles for a ticket to the World Cup. Ukraine will play the final match at home on March 31, again conditionally.

In addition to the 12 teams that finished second in their groups, the 4 winners of the Nations League quartet will also participate in the play-offs. All 16 participants are divided into 4 paths. Each route will include a semi-final and a final. The semi-finals will be held on March 26, and the finals will be held on March 31, 2026.
