The coffin with the body of the three-time world football champion Brazilian Pele was taken through the streets of Santos by fire truck and delivered to the Ecumenical Necropolis memorial, reports The Independent.
The place for burial was chosen by Pele, 19 years ago the Brazilian bought a niche there on the 9th floor. The necropolis is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the highest vertical cemetery in the world.
Earlier, at the stadium “Santos” “Vila Belmiro” ended the farewell ceremony with Pele. More than 200,000 people attended the ceremony, according to the City Hall. On the way to the necropolis, the car with the body of Pele drove through the streets of the city, in particular, past the house of the 100-year-old mother of the legendary football player. Hundreds of people followed the car for almost four hours, and there were people all along the route who wanted to see the Brazilian on his last journey.
Pele died on December 29 at the age of 82 from colon cancer. He is the only football player in history who has become world champion three times (1958, 1962, 1970).
The striker played 92 matches for Brazil and scored 77 goals. At the club level, Pele played for Santos and New York Cosmos.
