In Cape Verde, the “National Stadium” will be renamed in honor of the former Brazilian national footballer Pele. Previously President Fifa Gianni Infantino proposed this initiative.

The prime minister spoke about the renaming Jose Ulisses Correia e Silva.

Out of respect for Pele, I intend to name our national arena “Pele Stadium” as part of an initiative that I think many countries around the world will support. With the departure of Pelé, who has become a global star, a point of reference for the masses, demonstrating that sport unites the world, we want to pay tribute to him.

Cape Verde and Brazil have a history and culture closely linked to each other, they are two brother countries with a common language and similar values. Pelé has been and will always be a point of reference in Brazil, in our Portuguese-speaking countries and in the rest of the world, being an idol that unites generations.
